If you’re a person who likes to make change in the world through donations and you’re so sick of...
The Alley Oop Project
The Alley Oop Project is a wonderful foundation that uses basketball as a method of improving mental health by connecting with the community.
The simplicity of this project lies in getting participants of all ages, abilities, cultures, sexes and social economic standings to get involved in something active, whilst the by-product is to open the lines of communication for any health and well-being issues.
We caught up with the CEO Ashik to tell us all about it!
About the project
We are a new foundation, starting in July 2021 with a focus on mental health, wellbeing, awareness and the impact that activity can have on these issues.
We use the sport of basketball to facilitate our message and connect troubled individuals to assisting services that can help them get through their situations.
We work with a lot of third-party organisations such as other charities, NDIS support agencies, groups of psychiatrists and psychologists.
Who we work with
We see ourselves as an alternative communication channel for these groups and council workers to connect with their clients in a different way.
Rather than sitting in an office space, we have a purpose build vehicle that is essentially a mobile basketball ring that we can provide access to, to get these groups moving, connecting and working together.
We also partake in a lot of school programs to connect with the kids and raise awareness at an early age and show them that they do have access to certain services should they ever be in need.
Our values
We find that a lot of people struggle with asking for help. A large reason why we chose basketball as our tool for connecting is because of its inclusivity, and it requires both teamwork and communication - we want to get groups talking to each other and to connect with us and feel comfortable in doing so.
The reason we exist is to get people active, get people talking, making a connection and then referring them on.
